Leonard Asper has resurfaced at The Fight Network.

Nine months after he bowed out of a debt-laden and ultimately bankrupt Canwest Global Communications Corp., Asper has filled the CEO post at the category 2 digital channel devoted to combat sports.

Asper replaces George Burger, who was named last week by federal finance minister Jim Flaherty to the board of directors of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Before becoming president and CEO of The Fight Network, Burger was executive vice president of then Alliance Communications Corporation from 1994 until its merger with then Atlantis Communications to become Alliance Atlantis Communications in 1998.

Asper taking the helm at The Fight Network includes his acquiring a “significant” stake in the TV channel, along with Loudon Owen of Mayhem Media and McLean Watson Capital, and Ed Nordholm, a media industry advisor and financier.

Terms of the deal that gets Asper back in Canadian media were not disclosed.

The Fight Network launched in 2005, but has had difficulty raising growth capital after the late 2008 market meltdown and the recent industry ad downturn.
