Super Channel has handed out its Feature Documentary Awards to Nimisha Mukerji (producer/director) for The Coconut, and Brishkay Ahmed (producer/director) for The Story of Burqa.

With the award comes 15 to 20 hours of mentorship – Mukerji with Paul Saltzman (Prom Night in Mississippi, Map of the Human Heart), and Ahmed with White Pine Pictures (Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould, Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire) – as well as $3,000 to attend the 2011 Toronto Documentary Forum.

“The response we got to our first Feature Documentary Award offering was terrific and certainly made it a challenge to choose only these two excellent projects,” noted Super Channel creative development group lead, Marguerite Pigott.

The Coconut is a family portrait centered around 22-year old Shani Banerjee, an aspiring folk singer who struggles with her mother’s MS and her father’s own musical ambitions. The Story of Burqa is the history of a garment that has been “used and abused by Kings, politicians, fashionistas, and fundamentalists.”
