The movie from One Man Band Films about five youths on an suburban rampage captured digital video footage of violent assaults on unsuspecting victims on the mobile phone cameras.

And the film’s five actors – played by Montrealers Jesse Comacho, Alex Harrouch, Erica Deutschman, Laurin Padolina and Jaa-Smith Johnson – doubled as cameramen.

Think The Blair Witch Project in the film’s low budget, reality-style POV, with hand-held cameras replaced by iPhones.

The premise of Happy Slapping is the camera phone footage of the assaults will turn the five bullies into instant online celebrities.

Sourligas hopes the digital footage for his $250,000 film nets his indie project a distributor once a rough finished cut is available by end of the year.

The Montreal filmmaker earlier produced and directed the low-budget romantic comedy Elephant Shoes, which traveled the festival circuit before receiving a DVD release through Alliance Films and Universal Studios Canada.
