Canada lost an acting legend when Jackie Burroughs passed away at age 71 in her Toronto home on Wednesday.
Reports say that the U.K.-born actor was suffering from stomach cancer, and she was surrounded by family and friends in her final moments.
Burroughs is known for playing Hetty King on family series Road to Avonlea, aunt to the teen Sarah Polley, as well as for her role as Mrs. Amelia Evans in the Anne of Green Gables 1985 TV movie.
She has a lengthy list of more than 100 film and TV credits to her storied career, from recent voice work on the recent NFB’s short Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life, directed by Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) to appearing in Lost and Delirious and The Dead Zone. Burroughs also earned her first Genie for best supporting actress in 1982’s The Grey Fox.
Born in Lancashire, England, Burroughs came to Toronto at an early age with her family. She spent some time in New York with her then husband Zal Yanovsky before coming back to Canada and embarking on a long acting career on both the screen and stage, with several Stratford and Shaw plays to her name.
In addition to multiple Genie and Gemini awards, Burroughs took home the Governor General’s Award for Performing Arts in 2005.
Her last film appearance was a cameo role Small Town Murder Songs, which debuted at this year’s TIFF. She is survived by her daughter Zoe.
