The dealmaking on the ground at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday recorded the first major Canadian sale: Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies going to Sony Pictures Classics.
The U.S. distributor picked up the stateside rights to the English language picture from Entertainment One Films International.
Incendies portrays twins, a brother and sister who, after their mother dies, travel to the Middle East to search for family they’ve never met.
The Canadian picture gathered critical acclaim while unspooling in Venice and Telluride on their way to a six-figure deal following the Canadian movie’s first Toronto screening Monday evening.
Incendies stars Lubna Azabal, Méissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette, Rémy Girard, and is produced by Luc Déry and Kim McCraw.
Based on the stage play by Wajdi Mouawad, Villeneuve adapted the project for the big screen.
Sony Pictures Classics picked up the Richard J. Lewis-directed Barney’s Version for the U.S. market ahead of TIFF.
