Maple Pictures is in discussions to acquire the Jim Carrey-starrer I Love You Phillip Morris for domestic release after partner Roadside Attractions picked up the North American rights.
A Maple Pictures spokesperson said a sub-licensing deal has not yet been confirmed.
The talks follow an original distribution deal for Canada with Consolidated Pictures Group and Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp falling through.
This week, Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment did a new deal with EuropaCorp to release Phillip Morris stateside from December 3.
That opened the way for Maple Pictures, Roadside’s Canadian partner, to handle a possible simultaneous release into Canadian theatres as part of a new deal.
The movie features Carrey as a married conman who falls in love with his jail-mate, played by Ewen McGregor.
Phillip Morris screened at Sundance and Cannes in 2009 and has so far pulled in around $17 million in overseas distribution.
Maple Pictures last week said it will release Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful in Canada ahead of its North American bow at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The deal follows Roadside and Liddell acquiring the U.S. rights to the Spanish language dramedy that stars Javier Bardem.
