CW gets a Life

The CW has scooped up CBC’s 18 to Life for its summer schedule, adding the teen marriage comedy to its Tuesday lineup beginning next month.

The deal for 12 x 30 episodes was recently brokered by Life’s international sales agent ITV Studios. The comedy — a Galafilm and Sound Venture copro about the sudden marriage of two teen lovers — has just commenced filming its second season in Montreal and returns to the pubcaster’s schedule in January.

18 to Life

‘[Life] is right in the zeitgeist of Modern Family and other popular shows like that…it’s different, but still the kind of show that’s working on American television,’ exec producer and Galafilm CEO Arnie Gelbart tells Playback Daily.

The show will premiere with back-to-back episodes on CW at 9 p.m. on Aug. 3. The broadcaster, known for its young female-aimed shows including Gossip Girl, 90210 and Vampire Diaries, also has an option on all subsequent episodes.

Life premiered to 779,000 viewers (2+) on CBC in January and averaged 607,000 viewers for its first season. It stars Stacey Farber (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Michael Seater (Life with Derek) as the young couple, and also features Peter Keleghan (Billable Hours) and Ellen David (Mambo Italiano). The show is co-exec produced by series creator Derek Schreyer and Karen Troubetzkoy.

The comedy has also sold to international territories including France, New Zealand and Finland.
