Looking to repeat its success, the CFC and NFB are again teaming up to launch the second edition of its doc development program.
The program, which launched last year and kicks off in November, targets four accomplished Canadian directors with original doc concepts and is designed to advance their artistic approach as well as achieve commercial and critical success for national and international audiences.
Previous participants were Yung Chang, Sarah Polley, Shelley Saywell and John Walker, who collaborated with industry veterans such as Sturla Gunnarsson, Wim Wenders and Kevin McMahon, to name a few. Projects that came out of the session included Walker’s A Drummer’s Dream, one of Hot Docs’ Top Ten audience favourites of 2010; Chang’s The Fruit Hunters, which snagged the pitch prize at this year’s Toronto Documentary Forum; while Polley’s The Dark Room has entered production.
The program, led by Jerry McIntosh, Larry Weinstein and Gerry Flahive, is expanding to bring in emerging forms of doc expression, from creative mid-length projects to interactive works. The projects will also be considered for production when the program comes to a close.
