Vincenzo Natali’s Splice has become the highest grossing homegrown film of 2010, surpassing the $2 million mark at the domestic box office after five weeks – a rare feat for an English Canadian film.
Starring Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody as a pair of superstar genetic scientists, Splice opened amid a crowded frame on June 4 with roughly $760,000 for E1 Entertainment, and reached $1 million in ticket sales after six days in theatres.
The Toronto-shot sci-fi thriller continues to play on 19 screens in major markets. Its total box office for North America stands at US$16.7 million, as it opened day and date in the U.S. where Warner Bros. is distributing.
The film is the second Canadian copro to pass $1 million for E1 this year following The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which grossed $1.5 million. It is produced by Toronto’s Copperheart Entertainment and Paris-based Gaumont, and arrived with a $2 million P&A push by E1.
Splice still has some work to do if it is to surpass last year’s top English-language grosser, the comedy sequel Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day, which earned $2.9 million for Alliance Films.
