More than Just For Laughs

Canada’s comics are getting ready to flex their laughing muscles as the Just For Laughs Comedy Bootcamp kicks off this week.

Vets in the comedy film, web and TV industry will be on hand at the conference, taking place between July 15-17 in Montreal. The event kicks off with a trio of selected projects to be showcased in the Comedy Bootcamp for Film, which came from the CFC’s Comedy Lab film program.

The Pitch ‘Til Your Sides Split: TV Series Pitch Session is on deck for July 16, which will include never-before-seen projects such as the Canadian animated series Uberdude from Smiley Guy Studios (Odd Job Jack, Hotbox).

The third and final day of the conference will focus on the web and multi-platform series pitches, also including two Canadian projects. The ‘mockumentary-style’ Squared and Uncooked comes from Portfolio Entertainment producer Amanda Smith, Doug Kolic (Bite Television) and Alain Lapierre, and The Good Life from comedic duo Andy Busy and Mark Little (The Button, Backshift)

The TV series panel includes a who’s who of content seekers, such as Comedy Network director of content Michelle Daly, Canwest’s VP of Showcase and drama content Tara Ellis, MTV Networks’ SVP of comedy and animation Brent Hayes, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim VP of comedy development Nick Weidenfeld, and co-head of comedy development of Fox Broadcasting Marcus Wiley.

The final day’s panel on web and multi-platform series includes My Damn Channel founder and CEO Rob Barnett, Vuguru chief creative officer Kristin Jones, Independent Production Fund executive director Andra Sheffer, and CEO of College Humor/Notional Ricky Van Veen.
