2.4 million for Germany vs. Spain

The highly-anticipated contest between Germany and Spain for a spot in Sunday’s World Cup final has become the highest-rated game of the tournament on CBC.

Though sure to be eclipsed by Sunday’s final, Wednesday’s game generated 2.4 million viewers and 353,000 live streaming views online as Spain eliminated Germany with a 1-0 victory. (All numbers 2+.)

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s semi-final between the Netherlands and Uruguay averaged two million viewers with an additional 268,000 live streams as the Dutch squeezed by Uruguay 3-2 to advance to the final. Germany and Uruguay plays Saturday for third place ranking.

The semi-final matches averaged 2.2 million viewers on CBC, compared to 1.8 million for the quarter-finals.

Sunday’s final airs at 2 p.m. from Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium. Both the Dutch and European champions Spain are looking for their first World Cup title.
