The opening matches in the round of 16 drew big numbers this weekend on CBC as marquee teams began battling it out for a spot in the quarter finals of the World Cup.

On Saturday, the bout between the U.S. and Ghana grabbed 2.1 million viewers as the Americans were defeated 2-1 by the only African team remaining in the tournament. (All numbers 2+).

The nail biting game was the highest-rated in U.S. history, according to ABC News, as 19 million viewers tuned in, surpassing the Italy vs. Brazil World Cup final in 1994 (18.1 million).

Meanwhile, Sunday’s game between powerhouses Germany and England averaged 2.2 million viewers – the second most-watched game of the tournament so far, according to the pubcaster. (The highest-rated is still the England vs. U.S. match of June 12). The English were eliminated by the Germans in a 4-1 victory.

Other weekend action saw 1.9 million viewers for Argentina vs. Mexico, while Uruguay vs. South Korea drew 1.4 million.

CBC says it averaged 956,000 viewers per game for the Group Match stage of the World Cup, while there were 5.3 million live streams online.
