Sadness rippled across the industry as Toronto actor Tracy Wright, wife of Don McKellar, died Tuesday in her home.
Reports say that she suffered from pancreatic cancer and was surrounded by her family in her last moments.
With more than 35 film and TV credits to her name, many of Wright’s roles were smaller but she was well-known in the national film, TV and theater circles as a frequent collaborator with McKellar, Bruce McDonald and Daniel McIvor. She was co-founder of the Augusta Company with several stage performances under her belt.
Her first TV role was a stint on The Kids in the Hall in 1991, and her next appearance was in Bruce McDonald’s Highway 61, which also starred McKellar. Wright became a staple in the indie entertainment scene over the last two decades, appearing in such films as Me and You and Everyone We Know from Miranda July, Reginald Harkema’s Leslie, My Name is Evil, as well as episodes of Twitch City, the latter of which was also directed by McDonald and written by McKellar. She was active in the ’90s with such credits to her name as Wasaga, Eclipse and Bubbles Galore.
Wright has a small role in McDonald’s upcoming film This Movie is Broken, and his film Trigger, currently in post-production and penned by McIvor.
A service will be announced at a later date, and donations in her honor can be made to the Toronto Arts Council Foundation at 141 Bathurst Street, Toronto M5V 2R2.
