Telefilm Canada says it has no plans to stop financing low-budget independent French-language features.
Spokeswoman Eva Hartling said media reports that the funding body plans to abolish an $800,000 fund which finances films with a budget of less than $1.25 million are wrong: ‘There seems to be a lot of confusion. We are reviewing the program, which is what we do periodically with many programs, but the fund is not going anywhere.’
A group of 125 directors, including Francis Leclerc (Un été sans pont ni coup s°r), Bernard Émond (La Donation) and Philippe Falardeau (C’est pas moi, je le jure!) sent a letter to the Quebec media this week accusing Telefilm of preparing to eliminate the low-budget feature film fund. A similar envelope exists to support low-budget English-language projects.
The directors, who form an organization called a tout prendre, are concerned about the future of independent film in Quebec.
