BANFF: Movie Central on board Shatner doc

BANFF – Movie Central will turn the life of William Shatner into a feature length documentary, the Canuck pay TV channel announced on Tuesday in Banff.

The Captains will explore Shatner’s Montreal roots and his early career in Stratford, Ontario as well as his role as Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek — which catapulted him to international stardom.

Movie Central is partnering with Shatner’s production company Melis Productions and Ballinran Productions on the project, which begins production in July with the Canuck thesp behind the camera. Shatner will also exec produce Captains with David Zappone and Craig Thompson. A broadcast date has been set for winter 2011.

Shatner is in Banff to receive the Lifetime Achievement award and is also presenting a Master Class on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Movie Central has also picked up the Canadian broadcast rights to William Shatner’s doc Gonzo Ballet, about well-known choreographer Margo Sappington’s journey to create a ballet set to music from Shatner’s album Has Been. Gonzo will also air on the Sundance Channel Canada, which, like MC is owned by Corus Entertainment.
