Splice has passed the all-important $1 million mark at the domestic box office, delivering solid results for E1 Entertainment after six days in theatres, the distributor announced on Friday as the film headed into its second week..
The Canada/France copro, which bowed on June 4, was off to a slower start in the U.S. for Warner Bros., where it opened in 8th place with an ‘underwhelming’ US$7.5 million, according to Variety. (Its current box office is about US$8.6 million stateside).
The $25-million sci-fi drama from Vincenzo Natali (Cube) arrived on 170 screens in Canada, and roughly 2,450 in the U.S.
E1 co-president Bryan Gliserman says the distributor is ‘pleased’ with the result and hopes for more success in the coming weeks. E1 had high expectations for Splice, and contributed $2 million in prints and advertising to promote the film, which stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as a hotshot scientist couple who push the limits of science by creating a dangerous hybrid creature.
The film is the second Canadian copro to hit $1 million for E1 this year following The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which grossed $1.5 million. Splice is produced by Toronto’s Copperheart Entertainment and Paris-based Gaumont.
Coming up, E1 will release the Canada/South Africa copro The Bang Bang Club, starring Ryan Phillippe (Crash) and Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and producer Robert Lantos’ Barney’s Version, featuring Paul Giamatti (John Adams).
