Toronto filmmaker Denis Seguin is the winner of the Canadian Film Centre’s Reel Challenge contest which comes with a $10,000 cash prize, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The contest summons aspiring filmmakers to create a short film centered on the importance of creators’ rights and copyright protection for their work. Seguin won for his film, It’s My Right, which featured Canuck artists discussing their rights.
Second and third prizes in the amount of $2,500 were awarded to B.C.’s Nick Kalish for Respect the C, and Toronto’s Spencer Maybee for Respect the Original.
The jury was comprised of director Vincenzo Natali (Splice); producer Stephen Stohn of Epitome Pictures (Degrassi: The Next Generation); Eileen Arandiga, director of the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival, Wendy Noss of CMPDA; and Bob Pisano of MPAA.
All categories and genres of short films were accepted including drama, comedy, animation and sci-fi. More than 100 entries were received.
