Fishes, dance shorts win at CFC

A number of Canadian filmmakers took home awards at the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival, as the fest came to a close on Sunday.

Ten awards and more than $70,000 in cash and prizes were handed out in front of a 500-strong crowd. Montreal filmmaker Jean Malek’s Les Poissons (Fishes) won the prize for best Canadian short, while B.C.’s J.B. Sugar was named emerging Canadian filmmaker for his doc Wood If, about the process of woodworking.

Slip, a short dance film shot in a women’s change room, snagged the cinematography award for cinematographer Maya Bankovic. The film also landed director Chelsea McMullan best experimental short honours.

Other winners include Finland’s Hamy Ramezan for Over The Fence which picked up best live action short, and Australia’s Anthony Phelan and Noni Hazelhurst for best performance in a live-action short for A Parachute Falling in Siberia. Geoff Redknapp won the screenplay giveaway prize for his script The Last Christmas. Meanwhile, Polish director Jaroslaw Sztandera nabbed the Audience Choice award and $5,000 for his drama Luxury (Luksus).
