More Mosque, Erica for CBC

CBC is sticking with Being Erica and Little Mosque on the Prairie for 2010/11, with both series going into production on new seasons.

The pubcaster announced Erica‘s return for a third outing on Tuesday, while WestWind Pictures, the makers of Mosque, confirmed that production on 14 episodes of the veteran sitcom’s fifth season is already underway.

The news is a big vote of confidence in the series, especially since CBC warned last month it may have to cut primetime shows following a drop in cash from the Canada Media Fund.

Erica is slated to begin airing 13 new hours in the fall. While the series has received favorable reviews from critics, the second season saw a slight dip in viewers from its January 2009 debut — to an average audience of roughly 500,000 viewers. It is produced by Temple Street Productions.

The time-traveling drama, starring Erin Karpluk, was also picked up for a third season by Disney/ABC Television Group’s SOAPnet, according to CBC. The 24-hour channel reaches over 75 million households.

Meanwhile, Mosque, once CBC’s top-rated scripted program, will return in the winter. The show has seen a steady decline in weekly viewership following the high-flying numbers for its debut season, which averaged around one million viewers in 2007. Like Erica, it now plays to around 500,000.

CBC also recently picked up Newfoundland-set series Republic of Doyle and fellow rookie 18 to Life for second seasons. Heartland, Dragons’ Den, Battle of the Blades, The Ron James Show, Rick Mercer Report and This Hour Has 22 Minutes will also be back, though 22 Minutes is reportedly down to a half season. Action drama The Border was cancelled last month after three seasons.

New on CBC’s 2010/11 slate is the Paul Gross-produced sitcom Men with Brooms and InSecurity, a comedy set in a fictional spy agency.
