Al Jazeera launches in Canada

Al-Jazeera English

The English version of Al-Jazeera arrived in Canada Tuesday morning, carried by Bell TV, Rogers and Vidéotron.

The 24-hour news network, based in Qatar, also said it plans to open a Toronto bureau this June — staffed by seasoned foreign correspondents covering Canadian issues for AJE’s international audience. (What do you think? Email us!)

Stories that will be covered on AJE this month, according to a release, include Canada’s role in the war in Afghanistan, the environmental consequences of Alberta’s oil sands, reaction by aboriginal people to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, and the current government’s policy on climate change. Regular programming will have coverage of other Canadian stories, including segments on the weekly show Frost Over the World with David Frost.

AJE is broadcast in more than 100 countries worldwide and received CRTC approval in November.
