Xavier Dolan is headed back to Cannes, and will screen his latest, Les amours imaginaires, at the film festival next month. The picture is slated for the festival’s Un certain regard sidebar.
The love-triangle drama is the first Canadian title in that category since Zacharias Kunuk’s Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) in 2001. This also marks the young filmmaker’s return to Cannes after scooping up a trio of awards — including the SACD Prize for best French-language film — for J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother).
It stars Dolan, Monia Chokri (L’âge des ténèbres) and Niels Schneider (Tout est parfait).
Telefilm Canada is putting money into marketing Les amours imaginaires (Imaginary Loves), though it has not supported the production of either Dolan film. ‘The fact that a Canadian film is shown in the official selection generates benefits for the entire industry,’ said Telefilm exec Sheila de La Varende in a statement.
Other Canadians at Cannes this year include Atom Egoyan, who will serve as president of the short film jury.
Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood will open the fest on May 12. Other notable entries this year include Copie Conforme from Iran’s Abbas Kiarostami (Shirin), Outrage from Japan’s Takeshi Kitano (Akiresu to kame), Another Year by Mike Leigh (Happy-Go-Lucky, Vera Drake) and Fair Game from Doug Liman of the Bourne trilogy.
