Tory to raise cash at TIFF

John Tory has joined TIFF and will oversee the final phase of fundraising for its new headquarters.

The former head of Ontario’s Conservative party will, as chairman of the Bell Lightbox, look to close the $17.5 million gap that remains on books of the new complex which is set to open this fall.

‘John’s proven ability to generate enthusiasm and widespread support for the arts will be invaluable to us as we drive towards completion of this ambitious and successful campaign,’ said TIFF chairman Paul Atkinson in a statement.

The campaign has been at $162.5 million, 82% of the $196 million target, since late last year. The remaining $12 million in operating funds is also expected to be raised this year, followed by a drive for $4 million in endowments that will run after the opening.

Tory ran for mayor in Toronto in 2003, losing to David Miller, and currently hosts a weekday talk show on local radio station CFRB. He is also chairman of the Toronto City Summit Alliance.

When completed, the Lightbox will bring the festival’s year-round programming under one roof with more screenings, events and educational offerings.
