The CRTC has approved Moses Znaimer’s $29 million purchase of VisionTV, granting the former CHUM frontman control of the religious cable channel plus One: The Body, Mind and Spirit Channel and two over-the-air stations in the west.
The deal will result in some $2 million in funding for new projects — slightly more than expected because the value of the cable channels was recalculated during the application process. The CRTC traditionally puts 10% of a deal’s value into such ‘tangible benefits’ and pegged the value of Vision and One at just over $22 million.
CHNU in British Columbia and CIIT in Winnipeg, also known as the Joytv stations, were left out of the benefits package owing to their recent acquisition from Rogers and the CRTC’s small-market exemption policy.
