Industry fuels 3D research

Two more Ontario schools have landed cash for 3D research. The University of Waterloo’s Institute for Computer Research and the Sheridan Institute’s new digital studio, located at Pinewood Toronto, will receive a total of $14.7 million over the next five years from both private and government organizations.

The funding includes $4.9 million from the province’s Ministry of Research and Innovation, and will support a joint effort by the schools to make 2D and stereoscopic 3D technology available to mid- and low-budget projects for TV, gaming and mobile.

The partnership will combine UofW’s computer expertise with Sheridan’s production experience.

‘Working together with Waterloo… will help us develop our research capacity and practices at the same time as we help build these capabilities among Ontario’s digital media industry partners,’ said Sheridan president Jeff Zabudsky in a statement.

The news follows last month’s announcement that York University has raised north of $1.4 million to bolster 3D film production in Toronto and Ontario.

Companies contributing to the joint effort include Deluxe Postproduction, Autodesk and the International Cinematographers Guild.
