Jay Baruchel, Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson will square off against 3D sensation Alice in Wonderland, which is expected to continue to score big numbers for Disney in its second week.
Montreal’s Baruchel stars in rom-com She’s Out of My League for DreamWorks, out on a reported 2,700 screens in North America Friday. It’s a big year for the Canuck thesp, who also stars in Jacob Tierney’s acclaimed The Trotsky, coming up in theaters on May 14, after breakout roles in Knocked Up and Tropic Thunder. In League, he plays a dorky security agent who is obsessed with winning back his former girlfriend.
The week’s other wide release is Universal’s Iraq-set actioner Green Zone — reuniting Damon with The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass — which bows on 2,900 screens.
Twilight star Pattinson will court female auds with Remember Me, opening on 1,900 screens through Summit Entertainment. E1 Entertainment is handling the romance drama’s Canadian release and did not provide screen count.
Last weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland topped Avatar as the biggest 3D launch ever and has earned US$133 million to date.
Also opening on Friday:
• Fox Searchlight has the comedy Our Family Wedding on 1,500 screens. It stars Forest Whitaker and America Ferrera in a story about two families of Latina and African-American background, who have to deal with the engagement of their children.
• Bio-drama The Red Baron, from German director Nikolai Muellerschoen, opens at Toronto’s AMC Yonge and Dundas theater through VSC. The film is the story of the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in the First World War.
