Serious stuff at Sprockets

Garuda in My Heart, an Indonesian film about a boy dreaming of soccer stardom, the kid lit-based Le petit Nicholas from France, and Inuk, a coming-of-age story set in Greenland, are among the 68 films that will hit the big screen at next month’s Sprockets festival.

Twenty-three countries will be represented at the annual festival of children’s films, which this year will explore such serious subjects as terminal cancer and suicide, in the Swedish film Glowing Stars and the U.S.-made My Suicide, respectively.

From Canada, Sprockets is showing Neil Diamond’s Reel Injun. The English-language doc, which also played at last year’s TIFF, looks to correct the inaccurate portrayals of native peoples by Hollywood. This year will also see the presentation of films specifically chosen for the 13-and-under crowd.

‘With the opening of TIFF Bell Lightbox this fall, we will have even more opportunities to present programmes that will continue to entertain and inspire young minds and will further reinforce our commitment to engage children and youth in arts and culture,’ said organizer Elizabeth Muskala in a statement.
