Maple to re-release Hurt Locker

Maple Pictures is looking to build on the momentum of Oscar winner The Hurt Locker and will re-release the Iraq war thriller in theaters on Friday.

Kathryn Bigelow’s film, which nabbed six golden statues Sunday night including best picture and director, will play on 30 screens in all major markets across the country. The indie feature earned $1.2 million in Canadian theaters after a small-scale release in July. (It opened on one screen in Toronto and grew to 20 in its widest bow.)

The film, starring Jeremy Renner as the leader of a U.S. bomb disposal unit in Iraq, is the lowest-earning best picture winner ever, grossing only US$14.7 million at the North American box office for Summit Entertainment. The U.S. distributor is adding 35 screens on Friday, bringing Hurt Locker‘s screen count up to 318 theaters stateside. Summit says since the film’s DVD debut on Jan. 12, it has sold roughly 780,000 units to date including electronic download.

Hurt Locker is the third most-downloaded title on iTunes Canada, according to a Maple spokesperson, who says the film had nearly 1,000 downloads on Monday alone.

Maple also has two-time Oscar winner Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, which will hold on 28 screens on Friday. Lee Daniels’ drama about an abused Harlem teen is also out on DVD Tuesday in a well-timed release that will likely boost sales and rentals. Precious has generated $2 million at the Canuck box office since opening in November.

‘We are in awe of the success our films had at [the] Academy Awards. It marked the second time in five years one of our titles, not to mention independent titles, has gone on to win in the best picture category,’ commented Maple co-president Brad Pelman in a release. Maple also had 2004 best picture winner Crash.

In addition to Hurt Locker and Precious, Maple also had best feature documentary winner The Cove.
