Mountain comes back to Montreal

Spike TV’s Blue Mountain State will again transform Montreal’s John Abbott College campus into a frat boy playground.

Produced by Varsity Pictures and Lionsgate, the 13-episode college football drama, which debuted in January, has been renewed due to its popularity among men 18-34 and will start shooting a new season this summer, says Quebec film commissioner Hans Fraikin.

‘We are very happy with the number of service shoots we are getting,’ says Fraikin, adding that spending in Quebec increased to $130 million in 2009 from $85 million in 2008. ‘We want a healthy balance between service and domestic shoots. That way the whole sector isn’t totally dependent on Hollywood.’

The series spends almost all of its $25 million per season budget in the province.

Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have been scrambling to offer the best tax incentives to foreign producers. Last summer, Quebec introduced a generous tax credit which covers 25% of all production-related expenses. The province subsequently attracted the $110 million War of Gods and the $35 million sci-fi thriller Source Code.

Blue Mountain State follows the lives of a group of freshman playing on a college football team. Former NFL running back and veteran actor, Ed Marinaro (Hill Street Blues), stars as the coach.
