Less than Kind leads with writers

Less than Kind looks sure to win best episodic half-hour show at this year’s WGC Screenwriting Awards, which on Monday nominated the former Citytv sitcom for four of the five slots in that category.

The Winnipeg-set sitcom, now airing on HBO Canada, is nominated for its episodes ‘The Daters’, ‘Fun’, ‘Happy Birthday Sheldon’ and ‘Careers Day’, penned by four different writers and duos that include showrunner Mark McKinney, Garry Campbell and Jenn Engels. Corner Gas, which usually dominates the half-hour competition, rounds out the category with a nomination for its episode ‘Shirt Disturbers’.

It also looks like the CBC has taken hold of the variety category, with noms for The Ron James Show, Rick Mercer Report and two eps of This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

ZOS: Zone of Separation snagged two spots in the episodic one-hour category with ‘Bred in the Bone’ and ‘Shallow Graves’, joined by Stargate Universe, Flashpoint, Crash & Burn and Murdoch Mysteries.

In the feature film category, Crackie, the directorial debut from Newfoundlander Sherry White which premiered at last year’s TIFF, shares the nominee list with Jacob Tierney’s The Trotsky, High Life, written by Lee MacDougall, Love and Savagery by Des Walsh and A Shine of Rainbows, written by Vic Sarin, Catherine Spear and Dennis Foon.

Total Drama Action and Max and Ruby lead in the animation and children and preschool categories, respectively, with two nominations each, while How to Be Indie and The Latest Buzz also received two nods each in the youth category. Afghanada also snapped up two nods among radio dramas.

Guns received a nod in the miniseries category, joining The Summit and Paradise City: Degrassi Goes Hollywood. Guns star K.C. Collins on Friday took home an ACTRA Toronto award for his role in the two-part mini.

The awards, organized by the Writers Guild of Canada, will be presented in Toronto on April 19.
