OMDC doles out $2.9 million

The Ontario Media Development Corporation has dished out nearly $3 million to the province’s creative community, including the film, television and interactive sectors, as part of its Entertainment and Creative Cluster Partnership Fund.

The OMDC recently announced that Hot Docs, the Computer Animation Studios of Ontario, the Documentary Organization of Canada – Toronto, and the Ontario College of Art and Design were among 17 recipients of the fund, which was established in 2006. The money is directed at marketing, innovation, and skills development to help entertainment and creative industries ‘invest… and increase their competitive advantage in the global marketplace,’ according to a release.

CASO received money to support web-based development tools, while OCAD, in association with Corus Entertainment, will use the investment toward 2020 Media Features. York University and the Canadian Film Centre, along with Cinespace Studios, collected funds for their 3D Film Innovation Consortium – aimed at expanding the capacity for stereoscopic 3D cinema production in Ontario.

The provincial government last year announced a $12 million, four-year extension to the fund. It also supports book and magazine publishing, music, and commercial theater.
