Alice in Torontoland

Disney is heading down the rabbit hole with Tim Burton, as the highly anticipated Alice in Wonderland hits theaters on March 5. And members of the Disney Interactive Studios team popped by for tea time in Toronto last month to show off the Nintendo Wii and DS video games based on the classic children’s tale with a twist, coinciding with the film release.

Working with France-based game developers Etranges Libellules Studios, the DIS-published title takes users on two very different journeys, with gameplay and art design inspired by the film.

DIS international producer Mark Orgel says his team was drawn to the art-driven French studio to complement Burton’s eye candy on the game side. Burton was also consulted during the game development process and made it clear that he didn’t want players to have control of the Alice character so as to differ from previous incarnations based on the IP. So the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and company are all playable characters, and also incorporate the original film cast’s voices into the game, such as Johnny Depp, Stephen Fry and Helena Bonham Carter.

And while film-based video games often incorporate scenes from the movie, Orgel notes an instance for the Wii title in which the opposite occurred. Etranges had created cool visuals for the game which Burton liked so much that he adapted them for the movie. Additionally, while the look of the film resembles that of the style in the Wii title, the developers had created almost another world for its DS incarnation, incorporating a funky, modern black-line art style that makes it feel like an entirely different game and gameplay experience.
