Lightbox could open this fall

Bell Lightbox, under construction

The Toronto International Film Festival plans to open its new headquarters, at least partially, in time for its 35th edition this fall, according to a story in Screen Daily.

The industry publication on Tuesday said a number of changes are in store for TIFF, among them that the Bell Lightbox and the nearby Scotiabank Theatre (formerly the Paramount) will serve as the new locations for press and industry screenings. The screenings were previously held at midtown spots such as the arts-minded Varsity theater on Bloor Street.

The downtown Lightbox is still under construction though its lower section, which will be the new home of the festival, is nearing completion. More work remains to be done on its high-rise section, which will house several floors of condos.

The Screen Daily story, which did not cite its sources, says organizers plan to open some of Lightbox’s five screening rooms in time for the festival.

TIFF would not confirm any of the new locations or what parts of Lightbox will be open for business, however. A spokesperson says the information will be released as the festival, which takes place Sept. 10-19, draws near.

The organization earlier announced that the new host hotel is the Hyatt Regency on King Street, which is located next to the Lightbox.

TIFF Group indicated back in December that it has so far raised 82% of $196 million for its new headquarters.
