Quebec critics make picks

Polytechnique

Quebec’s film critics have released their five nominations for the best homegrown picture of 2009, including Denis Villeneuve’s tale of the 1989 Montreal Massacre, Polytechnique, and Xavier Dolan’s J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother).

La Donation (The Legacy) — the third and final film in Bernard Émond’s trilogy about love, hope and charity — also made the list as did Denis Côté’s Carcasses and André Forcier’s Je me souviens (I Remember), a film set in 1949 during Quebec’s grande noirceur (great darkness) when premier Maurice Duplessis and the Catholic Church repressed the population.

The Association québécoise des critiques de cinéma also named Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds as the best international film of 2009.

The domestic winners will be announced at the upcoming Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois festival, which kicks off its 28th edition on Feb. 17.
