• Colleen Walsh has been fined $2,400 and sentenced to one year probation after a Newfoundland court found her guilty of assault, say reports. The former Rogers TV and Global host (Structures, Body and Health) was charged following a disturbance last March onboard an Air Canada flight, during which she clashed with passengers and the flight crew. Walsh, who pled not guilty, was cleared of additional charges including causing a disturbance at the St. John’s airport.
• Pete Mitchell has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of Vancouver Film Studios, ending a two-year stint as EVP and COO. He is credited with building VFS’s stable of repeat customers and leading the charge to make the facility carbon neutral.
• The Young Victoria and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus both made the cut at the BAFTAs, taking a handful of technical nominations including one each for best hair and makeup. The British film and TV honors on Thursday nodded to Young Victoria‘s hair/makeup designer Jenny Shircore for her work on the Jean-Marc Vallée-directed bio-pic, putting her against Imaginarium‘s Sarah Monzani. Young Victoria is also up for best costume design, while Imaginarium drew a nomination for production design.
• Marcia Gay Harden and Aidan Quinn are in Toronto until February, shooting the comic drama If I Were You under writer/director Joan Carr-Wiggin (A Previous Engagement).
• Jean-François Caissy’s La belle visite and the Uganda/Sweden/Canada copro Imani are headed to Berlinale, part of that festival’s international lineup. Imani will make its world premiere at next month’s fest, while Caissy’s doc arrives after screenings in Quebec and at last year’s RIDM.
• Toronto factual producer Red Apple Entertainment has been rebranded as Frantic Films, taking the name of the Winnipeg outfit that purchased it in 2008.
