MONTREAL — Celebrated producer René Malo will be honored for his nearly four-decade career at the upcoming Prix Jutra .
Malo will receive the Jutra’s Hommage lifetime achievement award on March 28 at the 12th annual Quebec film honors, which will be broadcast on Radio-Canada.
Born in 1942, Malo is viewed as a pioneer of the Quebec film industry and has produced a number of internationally acclaimed films, including Denys Arcand’s Le Déclin de l’empire américain, Sonatine and Les Portes tournantes, which was screened in Cannes in 1988.
After working for Expo 67 and Radio-Quebec, in 1971 Malo founded the production company Corporation Image M&M, which mainly did educational films. In 1973, he created Malofilm Distribution and has distributed over 2,000 Quebec and international titles.
Malo is also part owner of a number of cinemas, and has been president of the Quebec and Canadian distributors associations where he worked with others to establish the distribution fund at Telefilm Canada, as well as the federal and Quebec tax-credit systems.
Malo has received a number of awards, including two Golden Reel prizes and two Genies. The Jutra finalists will be announced Feb. 16.
