Networks rally for Haiti

Canuck media companies are ramping up efforts to raise money for Haiti in response to the catastrophic earthquake that hit the island nation on Jan. 12.

CTV and sister stations MuchMusic and MTV will air the two-hour special Hope for Haiti Now on Friday at 8 p.m., hosted by George Clooney, Wyclef Jean and CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The commercial-free event will feature musical performances and celebrity appearances, alongside news reports from CNN. Donations will benefit charities including Oxfam America, the Red Cross and UNICEF.

CBC and Global on Tuesday said they would link with CTV on a separate Haiti special, Canada for Haiti, on Friday at 7 p.m., leading into Hope for Haiti.

‘I really think that this is a show of unity among the three broadcasters that we can work together to help in efforts much bigger than ourselves,’ says CBC’s Kirstine Stewart.

Astral Media and Corus Entertainment, meanwhile, both organized recent radio-thons. Astral raised over $800,000 on Monday through its 82 radio stations — an amount to be matched by the federal government.

Corus’ network of news-talk stations on Monday also held a three-hour radio-thon, Operation Haiti — hosted by veteran broadcaster Charles Adler — which directed listeners to donate to the Canadian Red Cross. A Corus spokesperson says the aid organization saw a 25% increase in contributions during the broadcast.

Meanwhile, Rogers Communications last week launched a mobile giving campaign to enable customers to donate funds to various Haitian relief efforts through text messages. The Rogers family also donated $250,000 in funds and goods to Partners in Health: Haiti and other organizations.
