Cairo Time and Mark Herman’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas have taken top marks with attendees of TIFF’s Film Circuit. Organizers said Tuesday that Ruba Nadda’s Egypt-set drama has taken the traveling movie showcase’s people’s choice award for best Canadian film, while the U.K./U.S. Holocaust tale got the nod among international films.
Attendees vote through the website following Film Circuit screenings, which show boutique and foreign films to moviegoers outside major cities.
‘You put everything you have into a movie — heart, love, everything — and when an audience turns around and really connects with what you’ve done really, it’s the best feeling in the world,’ said Nadda in a statement. ‘I am deeply moved by this award. To me, it’s the most coveted one.’
Cairo Time debuted at last year’s TIFF, where it also took the festival’s best Canadian prize, and opened in theaters a month later via Mongrel. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas came out in November 2008 through Maple Pictures.
