Vancouver producer/distributor No Equal Entertainment and Kids in the Hall Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley have landed a development deal with Canwest for a new half-hour comedy series tentatively titled Big in the 80’s. The series will be executive produced by No Equal’s J.B. Sugar along with Foley, McDonald and L.A.-based producer Jonathan Kesselman.
For the series, the Kids alum play former band mates of the fictitious music group Y-Y-Not, who are forced to reunite and live together.
Sugar explains that the idea for the series originated with McDonald and Foley as they were shooting Death Comes to Town, an eight-part mini which debuted on the CBC on Tuesday. Sugar pitched broadcasters during TIFF, and says that if all the stars align into a production order, shooting could begin in mid to late spring.
No Equal has just wrapped work on tween series The Troop for Nick in the U.S., and has several new projects in the hopper, including a feature based on the tragic Reena Virk story, as well as a 30-minute teen adventure comedy, which is currently in development.
