Dolan passed up at Golden Globes

Xavier Dolan’s J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother) will not compete in the foreign film category at next month’s Golden Globe Awards, which on Tuesday announced nominations for its 67th edition.

The Quebec filmmaker’s acclaimed drama was left out of contention by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which instead selected Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces, from Spain; the comedy drama Baaria, from Italy; drama The Maid from Chile; French prison film A Prophet; and German director Michael Haneke’s stark, much-lauded The White Ribbon.

Dolan’s moving drama about the relationship between a single mother and her son has earned critical acclaim and so far picked up 18 international awards.

Meanwhile, Quebec director Jean-Marc Vallée’s The Young Victoria received one nod for leading lady Emily Blunt, who was nominated for best actress in a motion picture — drama for her portrayal of the 19th century British monarch. The film opens Friday via Alliance Films.
