TIFF’s Lightbox nearing fundraising goal

The Toronto International Film Festival is inching closer to its fundraising goal for the Bell Lightbox, and has now raised 82% of $196 million for its new headquarters.

TIFF announced Monday it has received an additional $5.2 million in philanthropic gifts toward Lightbox, from contributors including Toronto’s Slaight Family Foundation, which donated $2 million to TIFF’s learning and emerging artist programs. Meanwhile, the Harbinger Foundation committed $500,000 to the campaign — and will get naming rights to an escalator — as did BMO (Bank of Montreal), which will see its name on a study center located on the fourth floor.

The remaining $2.2 million was awarded by anonymous individuals and foundations, as well as TIFF board members.

The donations bring the total amount raised to date to $162 million, according to TIFF. The organization recently also received a $10 million grant from the Ontario government.

‘Despite a challenging economic climate, we are very fortunate to see a number of long-time friends of TIFF step forward to support the future of our organization,’ commented TIFF CEO Piers Handling in a release.

The Lightbox is set to open in late 2010.
