Revenues up at CTF

Ahead of a major overhaul in 2010, the Canadian Television Fund says it raised revenues by 5.7% to $316 million during its latest financial year.

The industry fund – set to merge into the $310 million Canada Media Fund by April – released its 2008/09 annual report, with production funding totaling $275 million, an increase of 13% over the previous four years’ average.

The funder says it supported 435 new productions through its broadcast performance envelopes, which were designated to 55 English and 19 French broadcasters.

Drama gained the largest share of English funding commitments at 62%, on par with the five year trend, while children’s and youth programming received 19%, followed by documentary with 17%. English production funding totaled nearly $190 million.

Among the dramas that received the biggest financial boost were seasons two of CBC’s Heartland and CTV’s Flashpoint – each with over $9 million, while Global police drama Copper received over $6 million for its premiere season.

Meanwhile, French production funding reached a five-year high at $93 million, with 54% funneled towards drama.
