Corus readies Sundance Channel

Corus Entertainment and Rainbow Media are set to launch a Sundance Channel in Canada, rebranding Drive-In Classics as a spin on the U.S. cable channel.

The channel will launch in Canada on March 1 and will feature a range of lifestyle and movie programming inspired by (but not officially affiliated with) the film festival held annually in Park City, Utah.

Corus closed its purchase of Drive-In Classics, a former CTV property, last month upon approval from the CRTC.

Sundance Channel will feature a mix of programming including signature Sundance-style content such as niche genre movies and documentaries, as well as original series such as Isabella Rossellini’s Green Porno and The Lazy Environmentalist. The channel’s mandate is to air programming typically not offered by other channels, Corus president and CEO John Cassaday said in a release.

Sundance Channel was launched in 1996 in the U.S. and was acquired by Rainbow Media in 2008. It has 33 million subscribers in the U.S., according to Rainbow’s website.
