Hugh Hefner is coming to theaters next spring, after Toronto distributor KinoSmith on Tuesday secured all rights in Canada for Brigitte Berman’s documentary about the famed Playboy founder.
The deal for Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, which does not include broadcast rights, was struck by Kino’s Robin Smith, Berman and producer Victor Solnicki — in consultation with Peter Sussman from Aver Media. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, generating ‘amazing buzz,’ said Smith.
‘I’m flattered that the filmmaker recognized my passion for her film,’ he commented in a release.
Berman (Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got) portrays Hefner as a champion of the sexual revolution and an ardent human rights activist. It features interviews with Hefner, Reverend Jesse Jackson, George Lucas, Tony Bennett and Bill Maher.
