Veteran writing duo George F. Walker and Dani Romain are showcasing their funny side in the new comedy series Living in Your Car with a little help from acclaimed director David Steinberg, best known for his work on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Production on the 13 x 30 Car is underway in Toronto and Hamilton from producer The Nightingale Company (The Line) for The Movie Network and Movie Central.
Nightingale president Debbie Nightingale says the ‘timing was right’ for the series about a fallen corporate exec, who was caught cooking the books and now finds himself legally forbidden from working in any position that involves other people’s money. The series stars John Ralston (Life with Derek, This Is Wonderland) and Ingrid Kavelaars (ReGenesis), and is co-created by Joseph Kay (This Is Wonderland).
Nightingale tells Playback Daily Steinberg played a key role in rendering the comedic script by Walker and Romain, who are best known for serious TV fare including dramas The Line and This Is Wonderland.
‘They can write extremely funny, but the execution is what it’s all about, especially when it’s comedy because that’s not easy to pull off,’ she says, adding that L.A.-based Steinberg fell in love with the material and decided to come on board.
While Steinberg did not touch the writing, Nightingale says he was able to articulate what [Walker and Romain] hoped Car would be in terms of the actors and performances.
‘They have the same vision, but because David has done comedy for so many years and done it so well, he was able to bring things to [Car] that they may not have thought of,’ Nightingale notes.
In addition to Steinberg, episodes of Car will also be helmed by Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), Shawn Alex Thompson (Less Than Kind) and Paul Fox (The Dark Hours).
The series will wrap shooting on Nov. 24 and is scheduled to air sometime next year. Nightingale, Walker and Romain are also keeping their fingers crossed for a third season order of The Line from TMN/MC.
Nightingale hopes to find a U.S. home for Car, and along with Steinberg, will be presenting the first episode to broadcasters stateside in the next few weeks.
