Ivan Reitman is heading to the slopes.
The L.A.-based director/producer, recently in Toronto for the double-whammy premieres of Atom Egoyan’s Chloe and son Jason’s Up in the Air, will be feted at the upcoming Whistler Film Festival. Whistler will toast Reitman on Dec. 4 with a life achievement tribute and then put him to work as the president of the 2009 Borsos Jury, which presents WFF’s main prize, the $15,000 Borsos Award for best Canadian feature film.
Now in its fifth year, the award is presented to a Canadian dramatic feature from a field of six titles making at minimum their B.C. premieres. WFF has yet to announce its competitors, but it will likely not include Egoyan’s Chloe as that would put its producer in a conflict of interest.
Egoyan himself was the beneficiary of a WFF tribute in 2007. Others given the WFF treatment, which includes a stint with the jury gavel, include Donald Sutherland, Norman Jewison and Robert Lantos.
‘The Borsos Competition is a unique event that recognizes passionate and bold Canadian filmmakers,’ said Reitman in a statement. ‘The competition provides emerging talent with a much needed platform for their creativity and I am thrilled to be a part of it.’
Last year’s Borsos winner was 3 Seasons, directed by Jim Donovan. The best actor and actress prizes went to Clark Johnson of Nurse.Fighter.Boy and Carrine Leduc of 3 Seasons.
The ninth annual WFF runs Dec. 3-6.
