Alliance Films has snapped up the Canadian rights to fashion designer Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man, following its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and a deal with The Weinstein Company.
The acclaimed drama, which played in the special presentation program earlier this week, features British thesp Colin Firth as a college professor mourning the death of his partner of 16 years in a car accident. Firth won the best actor prize at the Venice Film Festival for his performance. Julianne Moore plays a longtime friend with an unfulfilled love for Firth’s character.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Christopher Isherwood.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Weinstein Company, which has an output deal with Alliance, acquired the U.S. rights on Tuesday.
Alliance’s subsidiary Aurum will release Single Man in Spain. No release date for Canada has been determined.
