It’s been a great summer at the Quebec box office, with three homegrown films currently among the top-grossing flicks, including Alliance Vivafilm’s cop comedy De père en flic, which has generated over $9.4 million since its release July 8.
Currently in third place overall, De père ranks as the province’s number one comedy so far this summer, and has become one of the top three most popular films of all time in Quebec.
‘We don’t make films to break records, but it’s pretty amazing,’ Alliance Vivafilm president Patrick Roy tells Playback Daily.
The movie features two of Quebec’s major stars — Michel Côté (Cruising Bar) and comedian Louis-José Houde (Bon Cop, Bad Cop) — as a father-and-son team of detectives who dislike each other but have to go undercover to save a fellow police officer.
‘We can safely say mission accomplished,’ says Roy, though he adds that he would be thrilled to hit the $10 million mark.
Also among the summer’s top-grossing films is Alliance’s Roy Dupuis-starrer Les doigts croches, with nearly $1.5 million at the box office after four weeks. It is currently is in eighth place for the week ending Aug. 27. TVA Films’ Les pieds dans le vide, currently in fifth place, and teen romance sequel ¿ vos marques…Party! 2 have also hit the $1 million mark. Party! 2 is distributed by E1 Entertainment and Seville.
‘This is one of the best summers for Quebec cinema in a long time,’ Cineac box office tracker Simon Beaudry estimates. Cineac will release its final statistics for the summer on Sept. 15.
