Though he is in the Canada First! program, Philip Hoffman is no newbie. For 30 years he has produced a variety of award-winning experimental shorts that mix fiction with documentary.

‘My films are kind of a blend of the North American avant-garde and the Canadian documentary film, particularly the early NFB filmmakers, who have been a strong influence,’ says Hoffman.

All Fall Down, his first feature-length production, juxtaposes the lives of a 19th century aboriginal woman with a 20th century drifter. Hoffman prefers to describe it as a ‘poetic documentary that represents the fabric of history and memory.’

‘Most of my films get shown at festivals, art galleries and museums,’ says Hoffman, ‘so I hope curators see the film, as well as programmers for other festivals.’

With production for All Fall Down beginning in 2002, ‘the challenge was keeping it on track over such a long period of time.’
