Bell drops case after CRTC blinks

Bell Canada has dropped its court case against the CRTC, now that the regulator says it will take a fresh look at fee-for-carriage this fall.

The phone company had turned to the Federal Court of Appeals, arguing that the CRTC had overstepped its jurisdiction by moving forward on the controversial fees before the public hearings, which were due to begin in September. Bell Canada owns Bell TV, one of the many satellite and cable companies that stand to start paying 50 cents per subscriber to conventional broadcasters if fee-for-carriage becomes a reality.

The CRTC has pushed hearings back to November – and says it will take a fresh look at issues including the ‘fair market value’ of conventional signals. The case was therefore dropped, says a Bell TV spokesperson.
