Polar Cap doc heads to Copenhagen

Toronto-based Polar Cap Productions will, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, present its new film The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning in Copenhagen during this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Attendance for the conference, to be held Dec. 7-18, is expected to include nearly 190 ministers and leaders and more than 11,000 participants worldwide.

The presentation is part of the UN’s ‘Seal the Deal’ campaign, which is calling for the creation and execution of an effective international agreement on climate change. Regarding the documentary, Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and executive director of UNEP, called attention to its ‘increasingly sobering scientific findings, [which provide] further stark evidence as to why governments need to Seal the Deal in Copenhagen.’

‘My goal for this film is to raise the level of consciousness in the world as to where we stand today on climate change issues,’ observes Mark Terry, president of Polar Cap. ‘My film is a report delivered by the scientists who have made the discoveries in the field. No other film has done that this year and I thought it was high time stats, figures and other related data on this issue come from the mouths of scientists rather than celebrities. It’s old-fashioned journalism — my attempt to provide information to the masses objectively with no agendas, hidden or otherwise.’

In the short term, Terry hopes the increased attention on the film will raise investor interest — living and filming in Antarctica wasn’t cheap. While the CBC has locked up domestic TV and Internet rights until 2012, the filmmaker is looking for sales and sponsorship dollars from outside Canada.
